The U.S. is now the most incarcerated state in the world, and the numbers paint a dismal picture. One in four people now have a criminal record. There are 5,000 more correctional facilities than colleges in the United States, and we spend over $63 billion per year on prisons. Ending mass incarceration requires the formation of a new national narrative around crime, safety, and fear.
